Datacentre Tours

Chris Loken, CTO SciNet, leads a tour of HPC professionals through the energy-efficient SciNet Datacentre in 2010.

SciNet offers tours of it’s Vaughan computer centre — housing the largest computer in Canada in one of the country’s most power-efficient data centres — along with hands-on demonstrations of scientific simulations that students can do on their own computers at home or school , to show how scientists, engineers, and social scientists actually use these enormous computers to power discovery and innovation.  These tours have been given to various youth groups around the city.

Suggested itinerary is 1:45; 30 minute introduction; 30 minute data centre tour; 30 minute hands-on demonstration; 15 minute snack/summary.   Group sizes of less than 30 students are best.   For an idea of what a typical tour entails, see our blog post of one recent youth tour.
